Know Your Role in a Team

"Everything that is excessive usually will lead to bad things."

I really believe that proverb.

No exception for the teamwork in a team. Someone with a dominant role on the team will cause the teamwork not working well. The other impact, it will cause someone with good potential can't perform well in the team and make his potential unused.

We often founded this kind of situation since we were in college and in the office. We will find someone who has better knowledge, technical and speaking skill than the others. And usually, because the rest of the team is just passive, that person got the role as a leader of the team easily.

Eventually, with that kind of teamwork, that person is the only one who got the experience from every assigned task on the team, and the rest just got a good grade without doing and experience nothing. Maybe if this happens when we still in college or school, be a passive member of the team is very "enjoyable". But, we will be really upset if we still doing that bad habit on professional work.

Maybe that kind of teamwork happens because there are so many people who feel inferior when joining the team that has a great figure, the figure that masters many things, so they just decided to leave all of the important work to him.

I also faced this situation many times. When I still in senior high school or college, I often become someone who feels inferior in the team. Honestly, I feel sorry when remembering it again.

Thank god, I got the opportunity to make up for that mistake when I got my professional job. Especially when I was given the trust to manage the team with some target to be achieved.

At that time, I recognized that it's not possible for me to master all the technical aspect needed to finish all the project. So I look around the team and found that the team member master some technical aspect that I don't.

So I decided to maximize every team member abilities. And when the project comes which require us to use certain technology, I already know who will get the responsibilities to work on that project, because I know every team member abilities. So I plot them on a specific project based on their advantages and abilities.

I work on my role to manage the team with my best, delegate the task and responsibilities to the member with the specific abilities based on the project requirement, open the discussion with the team when they face any difficulties in the middle of development so we can find the best solution together.

As well as the team member, they maximize their potential whenever the time comes for them to "shine".

The result is really delightful. Every team member can be actively involved in almost every occasion such as discussion to review the new project, the development process, and discussion to solve the problem in the project. And by using that method, to maximize every member potential, even it still needs to be improved in many aspects, but overall the final result is really satisfying. Every team member can maximize their potential that also gives a good impact on the project.

The point is, you need to identify your best potential first, offer that to your team, ask for input if there is still anything that can be improved. Because the best person is the one who always learns and can give a good impact on the others.
